Aerodynamics is arguably the biggest factor when it comes to speed on a flat or rolling course. At speeds above 15 mph (24 km/h), the majority of a rider's energy is spent overcoming wind resistance. This is why time trial bikes look so different and why riders spend thousands on aero wheels and helmets.

Body Position is King

Before you go out and buy expensive gear, know that your body accounts for about 80% of the total aerodynamic drag. Getting a proper bike fit to lower your frontal profile and maintain a flat back can provide more time savings than any piece of equipment. An aero position must also be sustainable; a position that's too aggressive and can't be held for the duration of your event is useless.

Equipment Matters Too

Once your position is dialed in, you can look at equipment. Here are the biggest upgrades in order of impact:

  • Aero Helmet: A good aero helmet can save you significant watts over a standard road helmet.
  • Deep Section Wheels: Aero wheels help cut through the wind, especially in crosswinds.
  • Aero Frame: Modern aero frames use specially shaped tubes to minimize drag.
  • Tight-fitting clothing: A flappy jersey acts like a parachute. A tight-fitting skinsuit or aero jersey is a must for racing.

By focusing on both your position and your equipment, you can become a much faster and more efficient cyclist.
